29th Annual Conference of the International Group for Lean Construction (IGLC)

July 14-17, 2021

Call for papers

Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to announce the call for papers for the 29th Annual Conference of the International Group for Lean Construction (IGLC 29), with the theme Lean Construction in Crisis Times: Responding to the Post-Pandemic AEC Industry Challenges. IGLC 29 is to be held 100% online and organised by the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, from 14th to 17th July 2021.

We invite researchers from Industry and Academia in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) and related fields to submit papers on Lean Construction research and applications for presentation at the IGLC 29

  • Academic research papers: papers reporting on R&D in the area of Lean Construction
(theoretical, empirical or a combination of both)
  • Industry research papers: papers reporting case studies and industrial/practical experiences in the area of Lean Construction (applications and findings should be strongly linked to Lean Construction, and they should make a clear reference to lean theory and/or existing work).

The conference will be organized according to the following themes:

  • Contract and Cost Management
  • Enabling Lean with Information Technology
  • Production Planning and Control
  • Lean and BIM
  • Lean Theory
  • Learning and Teaching Lean
  • People, Culture, and Change
  • Product Development and Design Management
  • Production System Design
  • Safety, Quality, and Green-Lean
  • Supply Chain Management and Off-Site Construction

This year, we encourage not only the submission of papers that cover traditional Lean Construction themes, but also those emphasizing the response to the managerial challenges imposed by the global pandemic crisis and the new ways of doing things in a post-pandemic AEC industry. Lean Construction has been a force of positive and significant change for the AEC industry over the last three decades. In the IGLC 29, we hope we can still inspire researchers around the world to join our community and make a change in academia and industry influenced by the Lean Construction values and principles. We do think that a post-pandemic response is not only a buzzword, but a pressing need to cope with the challenging times ahead to the AEC industry and the world.

Authors are asked to submit full papers (there is no separate submission of abstracts), prepared
according to the attached paper specifications, and conforming to the attached copyright agreement that can be downloaded on the following links:

Papers will be reviewed using a double-blind peer review process. Submissions will be handled according to the following timeline:

Upon paper acceptance, (co)authors must also submit their presentation slides and a recorded video. Further guidance on the requirements for these will be provided by the technical committee.

The IGLC’s body of knowledge on Lean Design and Construction is captured in the online repository of its annual conference proceedings. This repository is free to access at https://iglc.net/papers and comprises over 1,500 conference papers searchable by keyword and author. Many lean principles, methods, and practices used in the AEC industry today stem from original IGLC research. It is of utmost importance that authors review this body of knowledge and relate the work they present to it.

For inquiries concerning suitability of papers to be submitted to the IGLC 29, please contact any member of the scientific committee. For technical questions regarding paper submissions, please contact Luis Fernando Alarcon (lalarcon@ing.puc.cl) and Vicente Gonzalez (v.gonzalez@auckland.ac.nz).
